Bike Shop FAQ

Repairs & service

Most shops offer a few levels. A basic tune-up usually adjusts the gears and brakes, trues the wheels and checks the bike over for safety. Bigger packages add a deep clean of the drivetrain and replace worn parts. At the Toronto shops we checked in October 2026, a basic tune-up cost about $50 to $130 in labour, and bigger packages about $175 to $400. Parts are extra, so ask for a quote before any work starts.

Spring is the busy season, and repair queues can stretch past a week in April and May. Book ahead, or get your bike serviced over the winter when shops are quieter. Flats and small fixes can often be done the same day.

For a flat or a quick adjustment, usually yes. For a tune-up or a bigger repair, call or book online first, especially in spring. Co-ops and DIY spaces like Bike Pirates and Bikechain run on drop-in hours, so check their schedule before you go.

Many will, but some charge a higher labour rate for parts they didn't sell, and a few won't install certain parts at all. Ask before you order, and double-check the part fits your bike.

Plenty do, but not every shop works on every e-bike. Motor and battery repairs often have to go through the brand or a specialist. Shops on this page that sell e-bikes, like Sweet Pete's and Pedalinx, are a good place to start. Mention the make and model when you call.

Buying a bike

A new bike comes with a warranty, and many shops include a free check-up after the first few weeks. A used bike from a shop or co-op costs less and has usually been checked over. Either way, take a test ride and make sure the frame fits you.

It depends on your height, your leg length and the riding you'll do, and sizes vary by brand. The easiest way to find out is a test ride. For a closer fit, many shops offer a bike fit, where a mechanic adjusts the saddle, handlebars and reach to suit you.

Bike theft is common in Toronto, so take care with private sales. Ask for the serial number (usually stamped under the frame) and proof of ownership, and meet somewhere public. Walk away from a nice bike at a suspiciously low price. Buying from a shop or co-op takes most of the risk out.

Not sure what kind of bike suits you? A day on a rental is a cheap way to find out, and several shops rent road, mountain and e-bikes. Our Bike Rentals guide covers where to go and what it costs. Renting a mountain bike? Try one of our Trail Picks.

Owning a bike

Spaces like Bike Pirates, Bikechain and Markham Cycles give you a stand, tools and advice so you can fix your own bike, often for free or a small fee. It's the cheapest way to keep a bike running, and you'll learn how it works.

Leave room for a good lock, front and rear lights, and a helmet. A solid U-lock is worth the money in Toronto. Our Beginner's Guide covers the rest of the basics.

Road salt is hard on chains and brakes. Rinse the bike after slushy rides, dry it, and re-lube the chain often. Fenders and wider tires help. Storing it instead? Keep it somewhere dry and book a service before spring. Some shop rides keep going all year: see our Cycling Clubs guide.

Write down your serial number and take a photo of your bike now, before anything happens. If it's stolen, report it to Toronto Police and keep an eye on local resale listings.
