How group rides work

What does no-drop mean?

On a no-drop ride, the group waits so nobody gets left behind, whether they're slower or fixing a flat. Some rides regroup at set points instead, and fast rides may not wait at all, so check before you go.

How fast is easy, moderate or fast?

We use one scale for every group: easy is talking pace, under about 20 km/h; moderate is about 20 to 27 km/h; fast is 28 km/h and up. Clubs label their own rides differently, so one club's beginner ride can be quicker than another's.

What do the cost labels mean?

Free means there's no fee. Ontario Cycling membership means the ride itself costs nothing, but you need a provincial membership, which includes insurance. Club membership means an annual club fee, often on top of Ontario Cycling membership. Many clubs let you try a ride before you join.

How big is a small crew or a big club?

A small crew usually rides with fewer than 15 people. A mid-size group is roughly 15 to 40. A big club has more than that on a typical ride, or a large membership with many rides to choose from.

What should I bring?

A bike in good working order, a helmet, water, a snack, a spare tube and tools, and lights if you'll be out near dark. Our Beginner's Guide covers the basics in more detail.
