Before you go

Do I need to register?

Charity rides and big challenges almost always need you to sign up ahead of time, and some cap numbers or close registration before ride day. Community rides and night rides are usually drop-in: just show up at the start time. The event's own page will say which.

How fast and how far?

Social rides and night rides usually roll at an easy, chatty pace and stop to regroup. Charity rides often offer several distances, so pick one that suits you. If you're not sure, choose the shorter route.

What should I bring?

Water, a snack, your phone, ID, and a lock if you'll stop anywhere. On longer rides, carry a spare tube and a pump or a basic repair kit. Dress in layers, because weather near the lake can change quickly.

Do I need lights or a helmet?

After dark, Ontario requires a white front light and a red rear light or reflector, from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise. Helmets are required by law for riders under 18, and many organized events require them for everyone.

What if it rains?

Most rides go ahead in light rain and are only called off for storms or unsafe conditions. Check the organizer's website, email or social media on the morning of the ride.

How do fundraising rides work?

You register, often pay a fee, and commit to raising a minimum amount. That can be around $100 for a smaller city ride or several thousand dollars for a multi-day event. In return you usually get a marked route, rest stops, food and mechanical support.

Can kids come?

Many events have a short or family route, and some are built for kids. Look for the "Kids welcome" tag, and check whether young riders need to ride with a grown-up.
